Carl Cowan Park is one of those amazing Knoxville-area parks that families keep coming back to year after year. It sits right along the Tennessee River (three sides of it, actually), which makes for some seriously gorgeous waterfront views. My family has spent countless afternoons here, and it's become a reliable go-to when we want somewhere spacious with lots to offer.
What sets this place apart is the variety - you've got the splash pad that the kids absolutely love (perfect for hot Tennessee summers), multiple playgrounds so you don't have to share too much, fishing pier for the patient parents, basketball and tennis courts, and both paved and natural trails for walks or bike rides. The picnic areas are great if you want to bring a lunch, and they're clean enough that I actually feel comfortable bringing the kids here.
The park runs from dawn to dusk, so plan accordingly. And honestly, the sunset views over the river from that swinging bench area are just... wow. I've spent more than one evening there watching the sky change colors while my kids worked off energy on the playground. It's a reminder that the best entertainment doesn't always cost money.
Pro tip: This is in the Northshore area of Knoxville, which is maybe 15-20 minutes from Maryville depending on traffic. Totally worth the short drive if you want a bigger park with more to do. Parking is plentiful, so you won't be wrestling for a spot.
This is definitely one of those parks that makes me wish we lived closer to Knoxville - it's just that good. But honestly, even the trip from Maryville feels manageable for a half-day adventure.
