If you've got a musician in the family (or you ARE the musician), this is THE summer camp to know about. Steve Kaufman's Acoustic Kamp has been running for 30 years and is widely considered one of the best acoustic music camps in the world.
The Kamp runs for two consecutive weeks at Maryville College, each week focused on a different style: Old Time & Traditional Week (June 14-20) and Bluegrass Week (June 21-27). Students can attend one week or both!
What makes it special: - World-class instructors who are international touring musicians - Choose your "major" instrument from guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, bass, dobro, hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, songwriting, or vocals - Four daily instructor-hosted jams plus evening open mic - Kamp Koncerts where students perform - After-hours student jams that go late into the night - A friendly, supportive environment where you'll leave with new repertoire, techniques, and serious confidence
My husband and I actually attended a few years ago (I played guitar, he was on vocals), and the energy is incredible. People of all ages and skill levels come here. from complete beginners to professional musicians. and everyone gets exactly what they need. The jams are where the magic happens; you'll be playing with people you've never met before and feel like you've known them forever.
Pro tip from a mom who's been there: Even if you're not a musician, the Kamp Koncerts are open to the public and absolutely worth attending. It's like a private concert by touring musicians, and it's a wonderful way to support local music culture.
Registration typically fills up early, so if you're thinking about it, check the website and get on it. This is one of those Maryville treasures that makes our town special.
