One of America's most spectacular caverns, tucked in the foothills of the Smokies just outside Sevierville and an easy family drive from Maryville. Forbidden Caverns runs an entertaining, educational guided tour past sparkling mineral formations, towering natural chimneys, grottos, a crystal-clear stream, and rare white onyx walls — all kept at a steady 58 degrees year-round, with special lighting effects and well-trained guides.
The walkways are well lit with handrails at key points, making it manageable for older kids and families. Tours depart frequently (roughly every 15-25 minutes) and begin and end at the gift shop. Since tours are offered on a drop-in basis rather than fixed reserved slots, they recommend calling ahead to confirm current times and availability before you go.
Admission (subject to change): Adults 13+ $25; Children 5-12 $15; ages 4 and under free. No advance or online ticket sales — buy on arrival.
Good to know: The cavern is not currently accepting buses or large organized groups due to staffing and parking. If you are driving from Maryville, count on roughly an hour each way.
