For a low-cost, low-fuss way to get kids in grades 4 through 12 involved in something beyond screens, Blount County 4-H is a solid option. It's run out of the UT/TSU Extension office right here in Maryville, and there are no dues and no uniforms, which makes it easy to try.

Club meetings run roughly September through April, with classroom clubs during the school day for many 4th and 5th graders and evening community clubs held around the county at schools, churches, and community centers. Kids pick projects that suit them: beef, horse, poultry, clothing and textiles, food science, horticulture, performing arts, and more. Contests through the year cover public speaking, posters, demonstrations, and Clover Bowl, so there's something for outgoing kids and quieter ones alike.

4-H also runs a slate of summer camps and conferences out of the Maryville office each year, from Junior Camp for 4th through 6th graders up to STEM, culinary, and design camps for older kids. Registration and current dates and costs come through the Extension office, so check the website or give them a call. It's a long-standing, county-wide program with a real local home base.
