Zoo Knoxville Safari Sprouts: A Monday-Morning Favorite for Your 3-5 Year Old (Fall 2026)

August 28, 2026 ยท by Mary

If you have a toddler or preschooler, you already know the hard part of most zoo programs isn't the animals โ€” it's finding something that actually fits the 3-to-5 crowd instead of lumping them in with big kids. Zoo Knoxville's Safari Sprouts gets that right, and registration for the fall sessions is open right now.

Safari Sprouts is a weekly, 45-minute preschool program designed for kids ages 3-5. Each Monday morning the little group meets the zoo educator at the front gate at 8:35 a.m. for check-in, and class runs from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m., using the zoo itself as the classroom. Expect a mix of games, art, storybook reading, and short zoo walks, all tied to the month's theme โ€” and yes, plan on a mucky kid, because this thing runs rain or shine.

The fall 2026 schedule (Mondays, 8:45-9:30 a.m.):

The program runs from Aug 17 through Nov 16, skipping holidays and Knox County Fall Break. Since we're into September already, the best entry point for most families is the September "Where in the World" block.

Cost and the fine print: It's $10 per class for members and $12 per class for non-members. That fee covers one 3-5 year old and one accompanying adult. But here's the catch โ€” you also need zoo admission or a membership for both the child and the adult on top of the class registration. The zoo recommends buying those in advance, because tickets and memberships may not be available at the front gate the morning of class. Registration for each individual class closes the night before.

A few things worth knowing before you sign up: siblings under 3 can tag along with a registered sibling at no extra cost, but older siblings and extra adults can't attend. At least one adult per family has to stay. And because classes happen outside at different spots around the zoo, dress for the weather and don't stress about staying clean โ€” that's kind of the point.

Our family did this program when my youngest was four, and honestly the 8:45 start is the most use we've ever gotten out of a preschooler's natural 6:30 a.m. wakeup. It's a great post-drop-off, pre-nap way to burn energy, and it pairs well with the Blount County Library storytimes if you're trying to fill out a school-week morning.
