Where Kids Learn to Swim in Maryville: A Summer 2026 Guide to Local Lessons

June 12, 2026 · by Mary

Swimming is one of those skills you never want to put off. Every June, I see the same thing — parents scrambling at the last minute because summer camps, pool openings, and trip planning all hinge on one question: can your kid actually swim?

The good news is that Maryville has solid options for every age and ability level, and they are still accepting registrations for several sessions right now. Here is what you need to know.

Blount County Parks & Rec Swim Lessons

This is the most popular local option, and for good reason. Blount County Parks & Rec runs structured swim lessons at John Sevier Pool (1998 Sequoyah Ave, Maryville) throughout the summer. Everything costs $85 for an 8-class session, regardless of level, and classes are held Monday through Thursday — which means even working parents can get their kids in the water consistently.

Right Start (Ages 3-5) Two-week sessions with 25 minutes of instruction followed by 25 minutes of parent/child swim time. Kids explore the water, learn to float, kick, and do basic arm strokes. The parent/child portion lets you reinforce what the instructor taught. Sessions run: - May 18-28 (already started) - June 1-11 (just started) - June 15-25 (registration still open) - June 29-July 9 (registration still open)

All sessions are 6:00-6:50 PM.

Beginner Learn to Swim (Ages 5+) For kids who are new to swimming. Covers floating, kicking, freestyle, and diving. Students are grouped by ability into four levels, so your kid won’t be overwhelmed or bored. Sessions run the same schedule as Right Start, with time slots at 7:00, 7:30, and 8:00 PM.

Advanced Swim Classes (Ages 6+) Your kid needs to be able to dive into deep water, swim 10 yards, float on their back, swim 10 more yards, and be proficient in two arm strokes. If that describes your swimmer, the advanced group dives deeper into technique refinement. Only Session 2 (June 1-11) is currently listed as open, 8:00-8:30 PM.

Classes run rain or shine — they only cancel for thunder and lightning. Make-up Fridays are built in.

Registration is online through the Blount County Parks & Rec system (parksrec.com). Registration for the summer season opened February 1st.

The YMCA of East Tennessee

The Maryville branch of the YMCA has a long-standing swim program. From what I have heard from other parents, the instructors are patient and really good at meeting kids where they are — whether that is their first time putting their face in the water or they are refining their freestyle stroke. Summer day camps at the YMCA run from late May through late July, and swim lessons are a big part of what they offer.

The YMCA typically charges less than private lessons but more than the Parks & Rec program, and members get priority registration and discounts. Their specific swim lesson schedules and pricing aren’t posted publicly — you’ll need to call or visit to get current session dates and rates. The Y is at 211 Alcoa Highway, Maryville.

Flying Dolphins Swim Team

If your kid picks up swimming fast and wants more, the Flying Dolphins swim team (ages 6-18) practices at Springbrook Pool (636 Vose Rd, Alcoa). They compete through the Greater Knoxville Area Interclub Swimming Association and offer both morning and evening practices. It is not a beginner program — you want your kid to be comfortable in the water before jumping into team practice. But it is a real, structured program that has been running for years and gives kids a reason to keep improving.

What To Know Before Signing Up

Bottom Line

Blount County Parks & Rec offers the best combination of affordability and accessibility — $85 for eight classes at John Sevier Pool is a solid deal. The YMCA is worth checking out if you already have a membership or want a smaller class environment. And if your kid is already a confident swimmer, the Flying Dolphins team is a great next step.

The first two sessions have already started, but Sessions 3 and 4 (mid-June through early July) are still open for registration. So if you have been putting this off, now is the time.
