Rainy Days in Maryville: Where to Go When You Can't Leave the House

April 05, 2026 ยท by Mary

It happens every single time. You look out at dark clouds, the rain starts hammering against the windows, and you're suddenly panicking: My three kids are about to lose their minds in this house.

I've been there. I'm currently sitting in my office right now while my kids chase each other through the living room like it's a mosh pit. But I've learned a few things over the years about keeping your sanity when the weather turns.

The Maryville Public Library - Your First Stop

If you haven't already signed up for library cards, this should be priority number one. The Blount County Public Library is in a great location on Court Street, right downtown, with easy parking if you time it right (or park on the street if you're like me and don't actually want to pay the $2 downtown parking fee).

They do storytime Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30am, but even without storytime they've got: - A dedicated children's section with puzzles and coloring books that can occupy kids for 20+ minutes - A kids' computer area if you need screen time (I won't tell anyone) - Air conditioning that actually works (unlike some places) - The ability to check out books so you can go home and read them without making another trip

The staff there is genuinely helpful and I've seen them work with kids who are having genuine meltdowns - they're not judgmental, they're just... good at kids.

Mountain Valley Lanes

Bowling with bumpers. Need I say more? My kids are 5, 8, and 10, and all three can bowl here without getting frustrated. There's a small arcade area, and they do a family special on weekday afternoons. Ask at the counter - I don't know the exact price because I never ask, I just know it's cheaper than you'd think.

They're on East Lamar Alexander Parkway, which means you can get there from downtown Maryville without much drama. And they have that thing where the lanes are indoors so you don't get soaked on the way in.

Indoor Play Spaces

There are a few options in Maryville and the surrounding area if you want actual climbing structures and ball pits rather than "sit quietly while mom reads" options.

Little Valley Play Cafe - This is one of my favorites because it's a play space AND a cafe, which means you can actually sit down with coffee while your kids climb. It's designed for younger kids especially, and the setup is really thoughtful. If you haven't been, put it on your list.

Maryville's Play Station - Another solid indoor option for burning off energy. The kind of place where kids go in wired and come out tired, which is exactly what you need on a rainy day.

Sky Zone Trampoline Park - Trampolines, foam pits, obstacle courses. This is one of those places that's actually worth the money. My kids leave here exhausted, which is what I'm going for. It's a bit further out but worth it if you've been cooped up for a while.

What About Food?

Here's the thing - when it's raining and you're trying to keep kids entertained, you don't want to spend an hour at the restaurant. You want: - Food that's actually ready in 10 minutes - Something that won't make a mess if a kid actually does have a meltdown - Seating that doesn't immediately get covered in sticky fingerprints

If you're near downtown, Dean's Restaurant & Bakery is a solid pick - comfort food, quick service, and the kids love the bakery case. Jaboni's Pizzeria is another winner because pizza is the universal kid food and they're fast.

And if you just need something quick and familiar, Chick-fil-A in Maryville has a play area, which is free if you order from them. It's small but it works if you time it right.

My Philosophy

Look, I'm not going to tell you that you "should" have a perfect plan for every rainy day. Some days I just let them watch something on my phone and pray that it keeps them quiet for 20 minutes. That's valid.

But I do try to have a mental map of where I can go if things are about to get chaotic. And knowing that the library, a bowling alley, or a play center are all within 10-15 minutes of anywhere in Maryville makes a huge difference.

Check out our full playgrounds and play spaces directory for more options, and our libraries listing for all the library programs around town.

Pro tip: If you're heading out in the rain, pack a bag with: - A change of clothes (for you or them or both) - A plastic bag for wet shoes - Snacks that don't need refrigeration - A book or two in case you're waiting somewhere

Trust me on this one. You're going to need it.
