Mid-August in Maryville: What Is Ending, What Is Starting, and What To Watch For
Summer is officially on the clock now. The 4th of July fireworks are long gone, the libraries have wrapped up their big programs, and most summer camps are counting their last days. But in Maryville, the calendar never really empties — it just turns the page.
Here is what is still open, what is wrapping up, and what to start planning for this fall.
What Is Still Open Right Now
Splash pads and outdoor play — If the kids still need to cool off, the splash pads at John Sevier Park, Springbrook Park, and the greenway locations are still running, though hours are winding down for the season. Check the city schedule as some close early September.
Maryville Library programs — Story times and the Summer Reading program wrap-up events are still happening through mid-August. The library's Growing Ready to Read series continues weekly at both the Maryville and Alcoa branches. Head to blounttn.gov/library for the latest schedule.
Farmers market — The Maryville Farmers Market on South Depot Street runs through the fall. Saturdays, 8 AM to noon, through October. Local produce, baked goods, crafts, and live music on select weeks.
Downtown Maryville — Summer on Friday events continue through August. Broadway comes alive with food vendors, live music, and family activities.
What Is Wrapping Up This Month
Summer camps — Most Blount County Parks & Rec summer camps wrap at the end of August. The K-POP Dance Party Camp and Stretch-n-Grow summer sessions are among the last to close out. Camp Tipton's summer programs typically end in late August, too.
The Levitt AMP concert series — The free summer concert series at Jack Greene Park is winding down. Check levitt.org/amp-maryville-tn for final dates. The next season will bring fresh performers and usually kicks off in spring.
Pool season — John Sevier Pool's regular hours are limited as we move into fall. The pool typically closes for the season in early September, but check parksrec.com for any special swim times.
What Is Starting in September
This is the big one. Parks & Rec just released fall youth programs, and there is a lot to choose from.
Stretch-n-Grow Dance — New sessions begin Wednesdays, September 2. Options for Dancing Tots (ages 2-4, $99 for 6 weeks), Dance Stars ($99 for 6 weeks), and the recital-level program ($198 plus recital fee). All at Everett Recreation Center. Register at apm.activecommunities.com/mabparksrec.
Tumbling — Begins Tuesdays, August 25 at Everett Recreation Center. Two levels: beginner preschool tumbling ($78 per 6-week session) and advanced tumbling ($88 per 6-week session). Ages 6-12. Instructor: Micah McCarter.
Youth Karate — Maryville Isshin-Ryu Karate School (MIKS) has ongoing classes. Ages 7-12 meet Wednesdays 6-7:30 PM at Springbrook Recreation Center ($60/quarter). Ages 12+ meet Mondays and Thursdays 7-8:30 PM. MIKS has been the oldest martial arts school in Blount County since 1967.
Youth Guitar — Thursdays, September 10 through October 22 (no class Oct 8), 4:30-5:30 PM at Everett Recreation Center. $110 for 6 weeks. Bring your own guitar.
Pottery — Mondays, September 14 through October 12 (no class Oct 5), 5:15-6:15 PM at Studio 212, 934 East Broadway, Maryville. $85 per 4-week session. All clay, firing, and glaze materials included.
Intramural and youth sports — Fall leagues for flag football, soccer, and basketball are typically announced in September. Check the Parks & Rec website for registration dates.
YMCA — The Maryville YMCA at 1000 N Central St runs year-round after-school programs, swim lessons, and youth sports. Membership required, but day passes are available.
Maryville City Schools Adventure Club — After-school care for MCS students.
What To Plan For
Fall Break — MCS typically has fall break in late October (check your school's calendar). Blount County Schools has theirs around the same time. This is a great window for family trips — the leaves are just starting to turn, crowds are lighter, and many local attractions offer special fall programs.
Halloween — The Spooktacular Extravaganza at Centennial Park is Blount County's signature Halloween event. It's usually in late October. Check parksrec.com for details. The Blount County Fairgrounds may also host a fall event.
Winter activities — The Maryville Ice Skating Rink at Centennial Park typically opens in November. Downtown Maryville hosts the Foothills Winter Festival. Keep an eye on the city calendar for holiday events.
