Fall Heritage Days at the Museum of Appalachia: A Pioneer Village Day Trip From Maryville (Oct 22, 23, 29 & 30)
The Museum of Appalachia in Norris is the closest real "step back in time" day trip from Maryville — about an hour north on I-75 — and every October it runs Fall Heritage Days, a family- and school-friendly event where the whole place turns into a working pioneer village.
For 2026 the Museum is hosting Fall Heritage Days on October 22, 23, 29, and 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (the event calendar from Adventure Anderson, the county's visitor site, lists all four dates). School groups and homeschool groups should reserve in advance — the Museum asks that you book ahead (bookings@museumofappalachia.org) — but it's open to individual families too, and it's free for Museum members.
Here's what kids actually do there. The museum spreads its demonstrations across the open-air village: blacksmithing, sorghum and apple butter making, sawmilling, spinning and weaving, basket making, broom making, and chair caning. There's a hayride (last year the personal favorite was the tractor exhibition), live acoustic and bluegrass music on the outdoor stage through the day, and a hay maze plus an animal education and petting area built for little kids. For an extra charge your child can pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch or paint one to take home — which, if you've got a preschooler, buys you a solid 20 minutes of quiet.

The Museum of Appalachia is one of those places that sounds like a school field trip but ends up being the afternoon your kids talk about all month. If you can hit a weekday while the crowds are light, it's an especially easy one to bring a stroller through. Bring cash for any extras and for the gift shop, and you're set.
