Back to School 2026: First-Day Schedules and What Maryville Parents Need to Know

Blount County Schools started Tuesday, July 31. Maryville City Schools starts today, Monday, August 3. If your family has been caught in the Maryville-Knoxville crossfire trying to figure out when exactly your kids walk through those school doors, here is the rundown.

Blount County Schools — Already Rolling

Blount County Schools opened July 31 with staggered starts:

Maryville City Schools — Starts Today

MCS is doing a last-name stagger, which I have to admit I find genuinely stressful every year:

Before that, teachers and admin have already been in all week — administrative day July 27, professional development July 28 and July 30, and registration assistance on Wednesday, July 29. If you have not registered your kid yet and it is a new school, call and find out if they still have time slots.

The MCS 2026-27 calendar runs through Thursday, May 20, 2027 — same last day as Blount County, which is a nice coincidence. Key breaks:

Early Release Days

Both districts run early release on Wednesdays. MCS teachers get released early about 1.5 hours before students — which means pickup arrangements for Wednesdays that fall in the middle of your work week. Keep that in mind when you schedule dentist appointments and PTA meetings.

The Late-July Lull Nobody Prepares You For

Here is the part nobody tells you about back-to-school: there is a week or two of total disorientation. The house suddenly feels too quiet. The kids are tired from the routine shift.   4. Ask about transportation — bus routes are assigned by address, not by preference.

Both districts are used to handling mid-year enrollment. It is not ideal timing, but it happens more often than you might think.
